# Clett

**Clett** is a name used for many uninhabited [Scottish](/source/Scotland) islets and one to the south, though also in the area inhabited by [Vikings](/source/Vikings).[1] They include -

- One at 58.623644°N 3.5424908°W, near the north coast of [Caithness](/source/Caithness), just to the west [Holborn Head](/source/Holborn_Head) north of [Scrabster](/source/Scrabster).[2] It rises sheer from the sea[3] and is formed of [Devonian](/source/Devonian) [Thurso Flagstone](/source/Thurso_Flagstone),[4] also known as Caithness [old red sandstone](/source/Old_Red_Sandstone), part of the [Caithness Flagstone Group](/source/Caithness_Flagstone_Group), which has been eroded to leave a gap of about 15 m (49 ft) between the 30 m (98 ft) high Clett and Holborn Head.[5]
- About 5 km (3.1 mi) to its west is Clett of Thusater,[6] also known as Wester Clett,[7]
- Little Clett, [Brough](/source/Brough,_Caithness) is about 10 km (6.2 mi) to its east.[8]
- [Shetland](/source/Shetland) has two islets named Clett. One is to the south-east of [Wells](/source/Walls,_Shetland), just south of [Westerwick](/source/Westerwick).[9] It consists of five islets rising to 24 m (79 ft), with low cliffs and a cover of grass.[10]
- The other islet near Wells lies in Voe of Dale, north-west of it and may have had a [promontory fort](/source/Promontory_fort).[11]
- Another Clett is just off the north-west coast of [Skye](/source/Skye), north of [Isay](/source/Isay) and just to the west of [Waternish](/source/Waternish). It too is grass covered[12] and has [cormorants](/source/Great_cormorant) and [shags](/source/European_shag) and is made up of [basalt](/source/Basalt)/[dolerite](/source/Dolerite) columns.[13]
- The only Clett Rock not in Scotland is a rocky islet, just off the [Isle of Man](/source/Isle_of_Man) coast, near [Baldrine](/source/Baldrine).[14]
