The **Clearfield Coalfield** is a [bituminous coal](/source/Bituminous_coal) mining area in [Clearfield County, Pennsylvania](/source/Clearfield_County%2C_Pennsylvania),[1] United States. The coal seams are found in most parts of Clearfield County, with the notable exception of the northern part of the county.

## Mining history

The entrance of the [Pennsylvania Railroad](/source/Pennsylvania_Railroad)'s extension from [Tyrone](/source/Tyrone%2C_Pennsylvania), northwest to [Philipsburg](/source/Philipsburg%2C_Centre_County%2C_Pennsylvania) and [Clearfield](/source/Clearfield%2C_Pennsylvania) opened much of the field to coal mining. Later the [New York Central](/source/New_York_Central) (NYC) built the [Beech Creek Railroad](/source/Beech_Creek_Railroad) from [Jersey Shore](/source/Jersey_Shore) up [Beech Creek](/source/Beech_Creek_(Pennsylvania)) and entered Clearfield from the northeast. This line bypassed Clearfield and extended south to [Mahaffey](/source/Mahaffey%2C_Pennsylvania) and eventually into [Indiana County](/source/Indiana_County). Other rail lines included the [Buffalo, Rochester and Pittsburgh Railroad](/source/Buffalo%2C_Rochester_and_Pittsburgh_Railroad)'s extension down [Anderson Creek](/source/Anderson_Creek_(Pennsylvania)) to Clearfield, NYC's extension to Clearfield and down the [Susquehanna River](/source/Susquehanna_River) to Keating, and the [Bell's Gap Railroad](/source/Bell's_Gap_Railroad), which ran through the southern part of the county through Mahaffey. Each railroad opened numerous coal company towns such as Surveyor, Croft, [Karthaus](/source/Karthaus%2C_Pennsylvania) and Bald Hill on NYC's Susquehanna River line. Numerous other towns were built such as Gaazam, Glen Richey, Peale, Winburne ([Summerville](/source/Summerville%2C_Pennsylvania)), Hawk Run, Morrisdale and [Irvona](/source/Irvona).

The active mining of these fields has been greatly reduced since the 1970s. Some coal is obtained via [strip-mining](/source/Strip-mining) for the power plant at Shawville and other private enterprises. There were no active underground mines in Clearfield County as of 2007.
