Born in [Bologna](/source/Bologna) to Giuseppina Tafani and Antonio Cassinelli, a well known opera singer, he had two sisters, Paola Cristina and Loretta. Cassinelli began his career in theater, later dedicating himself to film and television work. His film career is divided equally between auteur films (with, among others, [Paolo and Vittorio Taviani](/source/Paolo_and_Vittorio_Taviani), [Liliana Cavani](/source/Liliana_Cavani), [Pasquale Festa Campanile](/source/Pasquale_Festa_Campanile), [Damiano Damiani](/source/Damiano_Damiani)) and genre films, especially [poliziotteschi](/source/poliziotteschi) and [action film](/source/action_film)s.[{{cite book|last=Enrico Lancia, Roberto Poppi|title=Gli attori. He was on a helicopter that crashed into the [Navajo Bridge](/source/Navajo_Bridge) due to pilot error.
