'''Claude Michel''' (20 December 1738 – 29 March 1814), known as '''Clodion''', was a French [sculptor](/source/sculpture) in the [Rococo](/source/Rococo) style, especially noted for his works in marble, bronze, & [terracotta](/source/terracotta).

==Life==
He was born in [Nancy](/source/Nancy%2C_France) to Anne Adam and Thomas Michel, an undistinguished sculptor. Anne was the sister of sculptors [Lambert-Sigisbert Adam](/source/Lambert-Sigisbert_Adam) and [Francois Gaspard Adam](/source/Francois_Gaspard_Adam). In Nancy and probably in [Lille](/source/Lille) he spent the earlier years of his life.  In 1755 he came to Paris and entered the workshop of his maternal uncle [Lambert-Sigisbert Adam](/source/Lambert-Sigisbert_Adam), an established sculptor. He remained four years in this workshop, and on his death became a pupil of [Jean-Baptiste Pigalle](/source/Jean-Baptiste_Pigalle). In 1759 he won the grand prize for sculpture at the [Académie Royale](/source/Acad%C3%A9mie_Royale). In 1761 he earned the first silver medal for studies from models. In 1762 he went to [Rome](/source/Rome), where his activity was considerable between 1767 and 1771.{{sfn|Chisholm|1911}}

[Catherine II of Russia](/source/Catherine_II_of_Russia) was eager to secure his presence in [St Petersburg](/source/St_Petersburg), but he returned to Paris. Among his patrons, which were very numerous, were the chapter of [Rouen](/source/Rouen), the states of [Languedoc](/source/Languedoc), and the director generale. His works were frequently exhibited at the Salon. In 1782 he married Catherine Flore, a daughter of the sculptor [Augustin Pajou](/source/Augustin_Pajou), who subsequently obtained a divorce from him. The agitation caused by the [French Revolution](/source/French_Revolution) drove Clodion in 1792 to Nancy, where he remained until 1798, His energies being spent in the decoration of houses.{{sfn|Chisholm|1911}}

Among Clodion's works are a statue of [Montesquieu](/source/Montesquieu), a Dying [Cleopatra](/source/Cleopatra), and a chimneypiece at present in the [Victoria and Albert Museum](/source/Victoria_and_Albert_Museum) in London.{{sfn|Chisholm|1911}} In 1782, he realized the decoration for the [nymphaeum](/source/nymphaeum) of the [Hôtel de Besenval](/source/H%C3%B4tel_de_Besenval).<ref name="Besenval Ambassade22">Jean-Jacques Fiechter / Benno Schubiger: ''L’Ambassade de Suisse à Paris,'' Ambassade de Suisse, 2ème édition, août 1994, p. 22</ref> His 1788 work ''[Dance of Time](/source/Dance_of_Time_(Clodion))'' is in the [Frick Collection](/source/Frick_Collection) in New York.  Another known sculpture is called "''The Intoxication of Wine''".<ref>* Clodion's "''The Intoxication of Wine''" [https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/192727 At the Met (NY).] Retrieved 29 April 2018.</ref> One of his last groups represented [Homer](/source/Homer) as a beggar being driven away by fishermen (1810). Clodion died in Paris, on the eve of the invasion of Paris by the forces of the [Sixth Coalition](/source/War_of_the_Sixth_Coalition).{{sfn|Chisholm|1911}}
