Classical Movements produces two choral [festivals](/source/Music_festival): Ihlombe! South African Choral Festival and Serenade! Washington D.C. Choral Festival,[1] in addition to the young artists music festival, Prague Summer Nights.[2] It also commissions new works from [Pulitzer](/source/Pulitzer_Prize_for_Music), [MacArthur](/source/MacArthur_Fellows_Program) and [Grammy](/source/Grammy_Award)-winning [composers](/source/Composer) through its Eric Daniel Helms New Music Program.[3]

The company began with tours to [Russia](/source/Russia) and [Ukraine](/source/Ukraine) one year after the [Soviet Union](/source/Soviet_Union) fell and soon added destinations such as [Croatia](/source/Croatia), [Eastern Europe](/source/Eastern_Europe), [Turkey](/source/Turkey), [South Africa](/source/South_Africa), and [Cuba](/source/Cuba).[4][5]

Since 1997, Classical Movements has been based in [Alexandria, Virginia](/source/Alexandria,_Virginia).[6]

In 2014, [Americans for the Arts](/source/Americans_for_the_Arts), an arts [advocacy organization](/source/Advocacy_organization) in the [United States](/source/United_States), awarded Classical Movements the BCA10: Best Businesses Partnering with the Arts in America.[7]

## Cultural diplomacy

Classical Movements has been involved in numerous cultural diplomacy events.

A year after its founding, in 1993, Classical Movements took the [Choral Arts Society of Washington](/source/Choral_Arts_Society_of_Washington) on tour to [Moscow, Russia](/source/Moscow,_Russia) with the [National Symphony Orchestra](/source/National_Symphony_Orchestra) [conducted](/source/Conducted) by [Mstislav Rostropovich](/source/Mstislav_Rostropovich). This concert marked the first time any event other than a [military parade](/source/Military_parade) had taken place in the [Red Square](/source/Red_Square). Among the audience of 100,000 was [President](/source/President_(government_title)) [Boris Yeltsin](/source/Boris_Yeltsin) as millions more watched and listened worldwide to the [live broadcast](/source/Live_broadcast).[8]

Classical Movements began touring to [South Africa](/source/South_Africa) in 1994 shortly after [apartheid](/source/Apartheid) was abolished and [Nelson Mandela](/source/Nelson_Mandela) was elected president.[9]

In 1995, Classical Movements became the first American company to offer tours in Croatia after the end of the [Croat–Bosniak War](/source/Croat%E2%80%93Bosniak_War), as well as in [China](/source/China) becoming one of the first travel companies in the country following the [1989 massacre in Tiananmen Square](/source/Tiananmen_Square_protests_of_1989), and in [Vietnam](/source/Vietnam) following the new United States [Embassy](/source/Embassy) in [Hanoi](/source/Hanoi).[citation needed]

Several years later in 2003, the [United States Department of State](/source/United_States_Department_of_State) and [John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts](/source/John_F._Kennedy_Center_for_the_Performing_Arts) invited the [Iraqi National Symphony Orchestra](/source/Iraqi_National_Symphony_Orchestra) to perform in Washington, alongside [Leonard Slatkin](/source/Leonard_Slatkin)'s National Symphony Orchestra. Classical Movements arranged for the Iraqi musicians' travel from [Baghdad](/source/Baghdad).[10]

According to its president Neeta Helms, Classical Movements worked for [Google](/source/Google) in 2009 to arrange all the travel and logistics for the debut of the [YouTube Symphony Orchestra](/source/YouTube_Symphony_Orchestra), where musicians from across the globe electronically met to perform at [Carnegie Hall](/source/Carnegie_Hall). In 2011, there was a reprise at the [Sydney Opera House](/source/Sydney_Opera_House).[11]

In 2010, Classical Movements arranged the travel for the first joint concert for American and Cuban choirs in [Havana](/source/Havana) on the [4th of July](/source/4th_of_July).[12] Later in 2015 the company arranged a Cuban tour with [Minnesota Orchestra](/source/Minnesota_Orchestra) despite there being no official [diplomatic ties](/source/Diplomatic_ties) yet between the United States and Cuba.[13]

Classical Movements was also involved in the official United States [memorial service](/source/Memorial_service) for [Nelson Mandela](/source/Nelson_Mandela) at [Washington National Cathedral](/source/Washington_National_Cathedral) in 2013 where on behalf of the South African [Ambassador to the United States](/source/Ambassadors_of_the_United_States), [Ebrahim Rasool](/source/Ebrahim_Rasool), they invited original Ihlombe! participants [Morgan State University](/source/Morgan_State_University) Choir and [Pacific Boychoir](/source/Pacific_Boychoir).[14]

## Orchestral and choir tours

Classical Movements organizes more than 200 concerts on 60 tours each season in 145 countries.[15]

- **Prague Summer Nights: Young Artists Music Festival** (since 2015) is a 30-day program for singers and instrumentalists to receive professional performance training and experiences. The [vocalists](/source/Vocalist) are mentored by a professional faculty of musicians who hold positions at major universities and conservatories or have major performing careers. It includes fully staged opera, directed by the [operatic](/source/Operatic) [baritone](/source/Baritone) [Sherrill Milnes](/source/Sherrill_Milnes), as well as orchestral concerts, [chamber music](/source/Chamber_music), solo [recitals](/source/Recitals), and [cabaret](/source/Cabaret) performed in historic halls in [Tábor](/source/T%C3%A1bor), [Prague](/source/Prague), and [Salzburg](/source/Salzburg).
