==History==

Clarmallagh barony was anciently the northernmost part of the [Kingdom of Osraige](/source/Kingdom_of_Osraige) (Ossory).

In the early 12th century, Finn Ua Caellaide ruled Magh Locha (Clarmallagh) separately from the rest of Ossory.

It was ruled by the [Ó Faoláin](/source/Phelan_(surname)) (Phelan).<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.libraryireland.com/names/of/o-faolain.php|title=Ó Faoláin - Irish Names and Surnames|first=Patrick|last=Woulfe|website=www.libraryireland.com}}</ref>

It is referred to in the topographical poem ''[Tuilleadh feasa ar Éirinn óigh](/source/Tuilleadh_feasa_ar_%C3%89irinn_%C3%B3igh)'' ([Giolla na Naomh Ó hUidhrín](/source/Giolla_na_Naomh_%C3%93_hUidhr%C3%ADn), d. 1420):
<poem>''I Muiġ Laċa na learg te''
''Ó Faoláin, fearḋa an fíne''
''Mór an dúthaiġ as díol dáiḃ''
''Do lín futha Ó Faoláin''</poem>
("In Magh Lacha of the warm hill slopes is Ó Faolain of manly tribe; Extensive is the district due to them, which the Ó Faolains have filled.")<ref>{{cite web|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=YMk_AAAAcAAJ&q=magh+lacha&pg=PR1|title=The Topographical Poems of John O'Dubhagain and Giolla-na-naomh O'Huidhrin: Edited in the original Irish from MSS. in the Library of the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin, with translation, notes, and introductory dissertations, by John O'Donovan|date=8 July 1862|publisher=A. Clarmallagh was formerly a part of the [Upper Ossory](/source/Upper_Ossory) barony, established by 1657; in 1842 it was divided into three [cantred](/source/cantred)s: [Upper Woods](/source/Upper_Woods), [Clandonagh](/source/Clandonagh) and Clarmallagh.
