'''Clanmahon''' ({{Langx|ga|Clann Mhathúna}}<ref name="auto">{{Cite web|url=https://www.logainm.ie/en/9|title=Clann Mhathúna/Clanmahon|website=Logainm.ie}}</ref>) is a [barony](/source/Barony_(Ireland)) in [County Cavan](/source/County_Cavan), [Ireland](/source/Republic_of_Ireland). Baronies were mainly [cadastral](/source/cadastre) rather than administrative units. They acquired modest local taxation and spending functions in the 19th century before being superseded by the [Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898](/source/Local_Government_(Ireland)_Act_1898).<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/buildings-search/building/40404101/drumloman-church-of-ireland-church-bracklagh-clanmahon-by-county-cavan|title=Drumloman Church of Ireland Church, BRACKLAGH (CLANMAHON BY.), CAVAN|website=Buildings of Ireland}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/buildings-search/building/40403111/legwee-bridge-corr-clanmahon-by-county-cavan|title=Legwee Bridge, CORR (CLANMAHON BY.), CAVAN|website=Buildings of Ireland}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=QR86AQAAMAAJ&q=%22Clanmahon%22&pg=PA1804|title=Annala Rioghachta Eireann: 1501-1588|first=John|last=O'Donovan|date=23 February 1856|publisher=Hodges, Smith, and Company|via=Google Books}}</ref>

==Etymology==
Clanmahon takes its name from the Irish Clann Mathúna, originally Cloinne Mathghamhna, "Mathgamhain's tribe," the ruling [Gaelic Irish](/source/Gaelic_Irish) dynasty in the area in the Middle Ages. The personal name ''Mathgamhain'' means "[bear](/source/bear)" and was a common name among warriors.<ref name="auto"/>

==Geography==
Clanmahon is the southern part of [County Cavan](/source/County_Cavan), east of the [River Erne](/source/River_Erne) and north of [Lough Sheelin](/source/Lough_Sheelin).<ref name="auto"/>

==History==

The descendants of Tomas Mór O'Reilly, king of [East Breifne](/source/East_Breifne) 1384–92, were rulers of Clanmahon in the 15th century; Tomás was the son of Mathgamain Ua Raighillaigh. The Uí Shioradáin (O'Sheridans) were a vassal tribe.<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://sites.rootsweb.com/~irlkik/ihm/baronies.htm|title=The Baronies of Ireland - History|website=sites.rootsweb.com|access-date=23 February 2021|archive-date=17 July 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190717210451/http://sites.rootsweb.com/~irlkik/ihm/baronies.htm|url-status=dead}}</ref> The [Ua Raghallaigh](/source/Ua_Raghallaigh) (O'Reillys) were also powerful landowners until the 16th century.<ref>{{Cite web | url=http://www.cavanlibrary.ie/file/Local-Studies/Library-Scanned-Docs/Breifny-Antiquarian-Society-Journal-1927-Vol-III-No-I.pdf | title=Breifny Antiquarian and Historical Society Journal 1927 | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171115190152/http://www.cavanlibrary.ie/file/Local-Studies/Library-Scanned-Docs/Breifny-Antiquarian-Society-Journal-1927-Vol-III-No-I.pdf | archive-date=15 November 2017 }}</ref> According to the [Annals of the Four Masters](/source/Annals_of_the_Four_Masters), in 1537, "The son of O'Reilly (Brian, the son of Farrell), a great loss in his own country, was slain by the people of the English [Lord Justice](/source/Lords_Justices_of_Ireland) <nowiki>[</nowiki>[Leonard Grey, 1st Viscount Grane](/source/Leonard_Grey%2C_1st_Viscount_Grane)<nowiki>]</nowiki>, who came to commit ravages in Clann-Mahon."<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://research.ucc.ie/celt/document/T100005E|title=Annals of the Four Masters|Annala Rioghachta Eireann|Volume 5|English translation|An electronic edition|website=UCC}}</ref>
