His descendant, William of Home (son of Sir Patrick of Greenlaw, the second son of [Cospatric III, Earl of Lothian](/source/Gospatric_III%2C_Earl_of_Lothian)), adopted the surname following his acquisition of the lands of [Home](/source/Hume_Castle) in Berwickshire in the early 13th century, through his marriage to his second cousin Ada (the daughter of [Patrick I, Earl of Dunbar](/source/Patrick_I%2C_Earl_of_Dunbar)).{{cite book|last=Nisbet|first=Alexander|title=A System of Heraldry|publisher=William Blackwood|date=1816|page=270|url=https://archive.org/stream/systemofheraldry01nisbuoft#page/270/mode/2up}} William's arms featured the silver lion of Dunbar but with a green field instead of a red field, in reference to his lands of Greenlaw. In the 14th century, William's descendant, Sir Thomas Home of that Ilk, married Nichola (also Nicola), heiress to the Pepdies of [Dunglass](/source/Dunglass_Castle%2C_East_Lothian). Through this marriage, the Homes acquired the lands of Dunglass, where they built [Dunglass Collegiate Church](/source/Dunglass_Collegiate_Church) (still extant today), and began [quartering](/source/quartering_(heraldry)) their arms with those of Pepdie, being three green {{lang|sco|papingoes}} {{gloss|parrots}} in a silver field. Later he followed the [Earl of Douglas](/source/Earl_of_Douglas) to [France](/source/France_in_the_Middle_Ages) but was killed in the [Battle of Verneuil](/source/Battle_of_Verneuil) in 1424. Most of the principal cadet branches of the clan are descended from his three sons. In 1473, his eldest grandson [Sir Alexander](/source/Sir_Alexander_Home_of_that_Ilk%2C_1st_Lord_Home) was created a [Lord of Parliament](/source/Lord_of_Parliament) as Lord Home, and appointed a [Warden of the Eastern March](/source/Warden_of_the_Eastern_March) in {{circa|1475}}. In 1488, his grandson [Alexander](/source/Alexander_Home%2C_2nd_Lord_Home) joined [Prince James'](/source/James_IV_of_Scotland) rebellion against his father [King James III](/source/James_III_of_Scotland), and had a commanding role in the [Battle of Sauchieburn](/source/Battle_of_Sauchieburn), which resulted in the death of the king. Following the battle, he was made a [privy councillor](/source/Privy_Council_of_Scotland) and the [Great Chamberlain](/source/Great_Chamberlain). He succeeded his grandfather as 2nd Lord Home. ===16th century=== [Alexander Home, 3rd Lord Home](/source/Alexander_Home%2C_3rd_Lord_Home) was appointed Lord Warden General in {{circa|1510}}. In 1513, he and his followers formed part of the army levied by King James IV to invade [England](/source/Kingdom_of_England). Lord Home led the vanguard of Scottish knights at the [Battle of Flodden](/source/Battle_of_Flodden), and while he was fortunate enough to escape the slaughter, many of his family and supporters did not. Home was later appointed as one of the counsellors to the [queen regent](/source/Margaret_Tudor). However, the fortunes of the Homes suffered when the [regency](/source/regency) was transferred to the [Duke of Albany](/source/John_Stewart%2C_Duke_of_Albany). Lord Home was arrested for treason after being accused of conspiring with the English, and he and his brother were executed in October 1516. Their heads were then displayed on [Edinburgh Tolbooth](/source/Old_Tolbooth%2C_Edinburgh). The title and estates were later restored to another brother, [George Home, 4th Lord Home](/source/George_Home%2C_4th_Lord_Home). On several occasions, he led Border spearmen against the English. The Home lands were occupied by the English, but his son, [Alexander Home, 5th Lord Home](/source/Alexander_Home%2C_5th_Lord_Home), retook them in 1549. He also supported the [Scottish Reformation](/source/Scottish_Reformation) and sat in the [Parliament of 1560](/source/Scottish_Reformation_Parliament) that passed the Protestant [Confession of Faith](/source/Scots_Confession). During the politics of [Mary, Queen of Scots](/source/Mary%2C_Queen_of_Scots), the Homes, like many others, shifted their allegiance more than once. Lord Home had supported the marriage of the [Earl of Bothwell](/source/Earl_of_Bothwell) to Mary but he later led his men at the [Battle of Langside](/source/Battle_of_Langside) against the queen. Then in 1573, he was arrested and convicted of treason against the young [James VI of Scotland](/source/James_VI_and_I). He was released from [Edinburgh Castle](/source/Edinburgh_Castle) only after his health had failed, dying a few days later.
