The **Civil Democratic Movement**[1] ([Arabic](/source/Arabic_language): الحركة المدنية الديمقراطية, [romanized](/source/Romanization_of_Arabic): *al-Ḥarakah al-Madanīyah al-Dīmuqrāṭīyah*; also called the **National Civil Movement**)[2] is a [liberal](/source/Liberalism) political movement formed in Egypt in 2017.

## History

The alliance was created in December 2017 and initially included seven parties and many "public figures", including [Hamdeen Sabahi](/source/Hamdeen_Sabahi), former minister Ahmed el-Borei and [Mohamed Anwar Esmat Sadat](/source/Mohamed_Anwar_Esmat_Sadat).[3]

The current alliance includes various parties that were also involved in the [Civil Democratic Current](/source/Civil_Democratic_Current); namely, the [Constitution Party](/source/Constitution_Party_(Egypt)), the [Dignity Party](/source/Dignity_Party_(Egypt)), [Socialist Popular Alliance Party](/source/Socialist_Popular_Alliance_Party),[4] [Egyptian Social Democratic Party](/source/Egyptian_Social_Democratic_Party)[5] and the [Bread and Freedom Party](/source/Bread_and_Freedom_Party).[6][7]

According to [Khaled Dawoud](/source/Khaled_Dawoud), the former spokesman for the alliance, it only met twice in five months following the [2023 Egyptian presidential election](/source/2023_Egyptian_presidential_election).[8]

The alliance faced divisions over [Ahmed Tantawi](/source/Ahmed_Tantawi)'s failed attempt to run in the presidential election. The Justice Party and the Egyptian Social Democratic Party (ESDP) opposed the decision by other parties in the alliance to boycott the election and reportedly declared "their intention to suspend their participation in the movement." According to the "media secretary" for the ESDP, the party sent an "internal letter" to inform other members of the Civil Democratic Movement of its suspension.[9]
