# CitiOpera

**CitiOpera** was originally known as **Melbourne City Opera**, which in turn produced the "spin off" company, [Melbourne Opera](/source/Melbourne_Opera).[1] CitiOpera is a semi-professional opera company based in [Melbourne](/source/Melbourne), Australia. Formed in 1997, it was the successor of Globe Opera.[2] In 2007 the company began performing at the [BMW Edge](/source/Federation_Square#BMW_Edge_Amphitheatre), a 450-seat indoor amphitheatre located in [Federation Square](/source/Federation_Square).

Initially the company made its home at the [National Theatre](/source/National_Theatre,_Melbourne), the [Comedy Theatre](/source/Comedy_Theatre,_Melbourne) and later at the [Melbourne Athenaeum](/source/Melbourne_Athenaeum), and featured Suzanne Steele, Ronald Dowd, [Margaret Nisbett](/source/Margaret_Nisbett), Maureen Howard, and Ron Stevens in productions of *[La bohème](/source/La_boh%C3%A8me)*, *[Faust](/source/Faust_(opera))*, *[Carmen](/source/Carmen)*, *[Pagliacci](/source/Pagliacci)*, *[Cavalleria rusticana](/source/Cavalleria_rusticana)*, *[Madama Butterfly](/source/Madama_Butterfly)*, *[The Merry Widow](/source/The_Merry_Widow)*, *[Die Fledermaus](/source/Die_Fledermaus)*, *[The Student Prince](/source/The_Student_Prince)*, and many others.

The 2007 season began with productions of Verdi's *[Il corsaro](/source/Il_corsaro)*, *[Attila](/source/Attila_(opera))* and *The [Pavarotti](/source/Luciano_Pavarotti) Story*, devised and narrated by director Joseph Talia and conducted by Erich Fackert. In 2008 the season commenced with a concert production of Beethoven's *[Fidelio](/source/Fidelio)* at Melba Hall, [University of Melbourne](/source/University_of_Melbourne). The company presented *The Puccini Story* in honour of the 150th anniversary of the birth of [Giacomo Puccini](/source/Giacomo_Puccini). This program was an analysis of how Puccini's personal characteristics impacted on the creation of his characters and the composition of his music. In March 2009, the company staged Verdi's *[Ernani](/source/Ernani)*.

Melbourne City Opera staged Verdi's *[Luisa Miller](/source/Luisa_Miller)* in September 2009, *[Andrea Chénier](/source/Andrea_Ch%C3%A9nier)* in June 2010, *[La rondine](/source/La_rondine)* in November 2010 and presented a tribute to Dame [Joan Sutherland](/source/Joan_Sutherland) in November 2011 at the [BMW Edge](/source/Federation_Square).

In March 2018, Melbourne CitiOpera presented the Australian premiere performance of Rimsky-Korsakov's *[Kashchey the Immortal](/source/Kashchey_the_Immortal)*, conducted by Alan Cook.[3]
