It is the seat of the [Municipality of Cirkulane](/source/Municipality_of_Cirkulane). It lies between the right bank of the [Drava River](/source/Drava) and the border with [Croatia](/source/Croatia). The area traditionally belonged to the region of [Styria](/source/Lower_Styria). The [parish church](/source/parish_church) in the village is dedicated to [Saint Barbara](/source/Saint_Barbara) and belongs to the [Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Maribor](/source/Roman_Catholic_Archdiocese_of_Maribor). It was built in 1684 on the site of an earlier building. A second church in the southern part of the settlement is dedicated to [Saint Catherine](/source/Catherine_of_Alexandria).
