# Cipressa

**Cipressa** (lij: *A Çipressa*) is a *[comune](/source/Comune)* (municipality) in the [Province of Imperia](/source/Province_of_Imperia) in the [Italian](/source/Italy) region [Liguria](/source/Liguria), located about 100 kilometres (62 mi) southwest of [Genoa](/source/Genoa) and about 9 kilometres (6 mi) southwest of [Imperia](/source/Imperia_(city)). As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 1,183 and an area of 9.5 square kilometres (3.7 sq mi).[1]

Cipressa gives its name to one of two climbs that feature in the final kilometers of the prestigious [Milan–Sanremo](/source/Milan%E2%80%93Sanremo) [cycling race](/source/Professional_cycling). Known as *The Cipressa*, the climb was added in 1982 to toughen the route before the final climb of [The Poggio](/source/Poggio_di_San_Remo).[2] The climb starts by the Mediterranean Sea at [San Lorenzo al Mare](/source/San_Lorenzo_al_Mare), climbing to Cipressa by the via Cipressa, via Provinciale and the via Matteotti. The bell tower of Cipressa's church marks the end of the climb, and has become a notable landmark in cycling.[3]

Cipressa borders the following municipalities: [Civezza](/source/Civezza), [Costarainera](/source/Costarainera), [Pietrabruna](/source/Pietrabruna), [Pompeiana](/source/Pompeiana), [San Lorenzo al Mare](/source/San_Lorenzo_al_Mare), [Santo Stefano al Mare](/source/Santo_Stefano_al_Mare), and [Terzorio](/source/Terzorio). Its *[frazione](/source/Frazione)* of Lingueglietta is one of [I Borghi più belli d'Italia](/source/I_Borghi_pi%C3%B9_belli_d'Italia) ("The most beautiful villages of Italy").[4]
