# Cilan Head

**Cilan Head** is a headland on the tip of the [Llŷn Peninsula](/source/Ll%C5%B7n_Peninsula) of [Gwynedd](/source/Gwynedd) in northwestern Wales, near [Abersoch](/source/Abersoch).[1]

Cilan Head is the southernmost point of the peninsula, on roughly the same latitude as [Dyffryn Ardudwy](/source/Dyffryn_Ardudwy), between [Harlech](/source/Harlech) and [Barmouth](/source/Barmouth).[2] To the north of the head is the hamlet of [Cilan Uchaf](/source/Cilan_Uchaf), a holiday home and a horse riding school.[3] To the west of the head is [Porth Neigwyl](/source/Porth_Neigwyl) or Nigel, an indented bay of about four miles long, which is named after Sir [Nigel Loring](/source/Neil_Loring).[1] Beyond the headland further to the east is [Saint Tudwal's Island West](/source/Saint_Tudwal's_Islands) and [St Tudwal’s Lighthouse](/source/St_Tudwal%E2%80%99s_Lighthouse), built in the late 1870s.[4]

The [BBC](/source/BBC) describes Cilan Head as "an area of common ground covering 215 acres", with "grazing rights for 900 sheep, 79 cattle, 30 geese and three ponies on the headland". They note that blades used by Mesolithic nomadic hunters have been unearthed at the site.[4] The head is a breeding ground for birds, particularly [cormorants](/source/Cormorant).[5] Populations of the black [minotaur beetle](/source/Minotaur_beetle) and [green tiger beetle](/source/Green_tiger_beetle) have been found in the head.[6]

Cilan Head is known for being a dangerous place to rock climb, and is popular with climbing enthusiasts. The cliff, near the [Ty’n Tywyn Quarries](/source/Ty%E2%80%99n_Tywyn_Quarries), consists of a mixture of shale and grit bands.[7]
