The '''Central Council for the Care of Churches''' of the [Church of England](/source/Church_of_England) was formed in 1917, developing from the Central Committee for the Protection of English Churches under the [Archbishops' Council](/source/Archbishops'_Council). [Francis Carolus Eeles](/source/Francis_Carolus_Eeles) was the first honorary secretary from 1917, and served as paid secretary from 1926 until his death in 1954.<ref name="Times">'Obituary: Dr. F. Eeles', ''The Times'', 18 August 1954</ref> [Judith Scott](/source/Judith_Scott_(antiquary)) was general secretary from 1957 to 1971,<ref>{{cite news |last=Burman |first=Peter |date=2011-07-07 |url=https://www.theguardian.com/theguardian/2011/jul/07/judith-scott-obituary-churches |title=Judith Scott obituary |work=The Guardian  |access-date=2020-03-31 }}</ref> and [Peter Burman](/source/Peter_Burman) was general secretary from 1977 to 1990.
