# Chumped

**Chumped** was an American [pop punk](/source/Pop_punk) band based in [Brooklyn](/source/Brooklyn), New York, United States.[1] The band formed in 2012, and released two [extended plays](/source/Extended_plays) before releasing their sole LP, *[Teenage Retirement](/source/Teenage_Retirement)*, in 2014 on Anchorless Records. The band announced an "indefinite hiatus" in 2015 and performed their final show in February 2016.

## History

Pyle, Johnson and Frelly moved to New York City from [Monument](/source/Monument,_Colorado), Colorado, where Pyle met [New Jersey](/source/New_Jersey) resident Doug McKeever while working at the [Fort Greene](/source/Fort_Greene) farmers market.[2] The band released their debut, self-titled EP in October 2013 on Anchorless Records. Dan Ozzi wrote in *[Vice](/source/Vice_(magazine))* that it was "the best pop-punk debut you will hear all year,"[3] and Melissa Fossum dubbed it the best album of 2013 in her submission to the [Pazz & Jop](/source/Pazz_%26_Jop) that year.[4] During this time, Chumped shared the stage with bands such as [Iron Chic](/source/Iron_Chic), [Cayetana](/source/Cayetana_(band)), [Lee Hartney Sex Drive](/source/The_Smith_Street_Band), Benny The Jet Rodriguez, Elway, [Modern Baseball](/source/Modern_Baseball_(band)), and [Saves the Day](/source/Saves_the_Day) during a surprise late-night performance[5] of *Through Being Cool* in September 2013 at Saint Vitus Bar in Brooklyn.

*That's the Thing is Like...* was released in September 2014, which featured "Hot 97 Summer Jam", the first single from their forthcoming LP *Teenage Retirement*.[6] It coincided with a performance at the [Riot Fest](/source/Riot_Fest) in Chicago alongside [Weezer](/source/Weezer), [Slayer](/source/Slayer), [NOFX](/source/NOFX), [The Get Up Kids](/source/The_Get_Up_Kids), [Lemuria](/source/Lemuria_(American_band)) and many more.[6][7] Chumped released their debut full-length album *Teenage Retirement* on November 18, 2014 (Anchorless Records),[1] titled after the band some members played in prior to Chumped's formation. The album's sound has been compared to that of [Superchunk](/source/Superchunk),[8] [Nirvana](/source/Nirvana_(band)),[9] and [Slingshot Dakota](/source/Slingshot_Dakota).[10] A music video for "December is the Longest Month" was released in December 2014.[11] In November the band embarked on a month-long headlining tour.[12]

In February 2015, Chumped toured Europe and the UK. Also in February 2015, Joel Tannenbaum ([Plow United](/source/Plow_United), Ex Friends) and Mikey Erg ([The Ergs!](/source/The_Ergs!), The Dopamines) formed a new project called The Rentiers which features Anika Pyle (Chumped) and Tyler Pursel (Goddamnit, [Gym Class Heroes](/source/Gym_Class_Heroes)).[13] Their debut EP *Here Is A List Of Things That Exist* will be released on March 24, 2015 via [Square of Opposition](/source/Square_of_Opposition) and Death to False Hope, and can be streamed in its entirety via SoundCloud. Chumped toured with [Andrew Jackson Jihad](/source/Andrew_Jackson_Jihad), [The Smith Street Band](/source/The_Smith_Street_Band), and [Jeff Rosenstock](/source/Jeff_Rosenstock) on their full United States tour during Spring 2015,[6] followed by supporting [The Menzingers](/source/The_Menzingers) for three weeks in June 2015.[14]

Chumped announced its indefinite hiatus its social media accounts in October 2015, initially choosing to play one last show in [Gainesville, Florida](/source/Gainesville,_Florida), on November 1.[15] Andrew Unterberger at *[Spin](/source/Spin_(magazine))* considered the announcement "an unexpectedly abrupt end one of the most promising young careers in DIY punk."[16] The band played their final show on February 6, 2016 in [Brooklyn](/source/Brooklyn) with [Jeff Rosenstock](/source/Jeff_Rosenstock), Adult Dude and [Chris Gethard](/source/Chris_Gethard)'s Smiths tribute band.[17]
