He was the son of the Rev. William Cyril Luxmoore and his wife Constance Evelyn Shoesmith.<ref name="WW">{{Who's Who|title=Luxmoore, Rt Rev. His first post was as a [curate](/source/curate) at St John the Baptist, [Newcastle upon Tyne](/source/Newcastle_upon_Tyne) after which he was [Priest in Charge](/source/Priest_in_Charge) of St Bede's, Newsham, [County Durham](/source/County_Durham). Luxmoore married in 1955 Judith Johnstone, daughter of canon Verney Johnstone; they had four sons and a daughter.<ref name="WW"/>
