# Christopher Danby

16th-century English politician

**Sir Christopher Danby** [MP](/source/Member_of_parliament) [JP](/source/Justice_of_the_peace) (1503 – 14 June 1571), of [Farnley](/source/Farnley_Hall%2C_West_Yorkshire), [Masham](/source/Masham), and [Thorp Perrow](/source/Thorp_Perrow), Yorkshire, of [St. Paul's Cray](/source/St_Paul's_Cray), Kent, and of [Kettleby](/source/Kettleby%2C_Lincolnshire), Lincolnshire, and of [Nayland](/source/Nayland), Suffolk, was an English politician.[1]

## Life

He was born to Sir Christopher Danby and Margaret ([née](/source/Birth_name#Maiden_and_married_names) Scrope), daughter and coheiress of [Thomas Scrope, 5th Baron Scrope of Masham](/source/Thomas_Scrope%2C_5th_Baron_Scrope_of_Masham). He succeeded to his father's estates in 1518, and on the death of his mother, inherited the manor of Masham. He was knighted in 1533 at the coronation of Queen [Anne Boleyn](/source/Anne_Boleyn) (second wife of [King Henry VIII](/source/Henry_VIII_of_England)).[1]

He served as [High Sheriff of Yorkshire](/source/High_Sheriff_of_Yorkshire) in 1545, and was a [Member of Parliament](/source/Member_of_Parliament) (M.P.) for [Yorkshire](/source/Yorkshire_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) in April 1554.[1]

He married Elizabeth Neville, daughter of [Richard Neville, 2nd Baron Latimer](/source/Richard_Neville%2C_2nd_Baron_Latimer), and Anne Stafford. They had fourteen children (six sons and eight daughters). His heir on his death was his son, Sir Thomas Danby.[1]

Their six sons were

- Sir Thomas Danby (c.1530-1590) married Mary Neville in line with a 1534 contract.[2]

- John Danby,

- James Danby,

- Marmaduke Danby, and

- William Danby, who was possibly the [William Danby](/source/William_Danby_(coroner)) who served as coroner at the inquest into the death of [Christopher Marlowe](/source/Christopher_Marlowe) in 1593.

Their eight daughters were

- Dorothy Danby, who married Sir John Neville;

- Mary Danby; who married Sir Edmund Mauleverer

- Joan Danby, who married Roger Meynell, esquire;

- Margaret Danby, who married Christopher Hopton, esquire;

- Anne Danby, who married Sir Walter Calverley, and was the grandmother of [Walter Calverley](/source/Walter_Calverley) (d. 1605), whose murder of his children is dramatised in *[A Yorkshire Tragedy](/source/A_Yorkshire_Tragedy)*, attributed on the title page to [William Shakespeare](/source/William_Shakespeare);[3]

- Elizabeth Danby, who married Thomas Wentworth, esquire;

- Magdalen Danby, who married [Sir Marmaduke Wyvill, 1st Baronet](/source/Sir_Marmaduke_Wyvill%2C_1st_Baronet);[4] and

- Margery Danby, who married Christopher Mallory, esquire.[5]
