**Christopher Ralph Chippindale**, [FSA](/source/Society_of_Antiquaries_of_London) (born 13 October 1951) is a British [archaeologist](/source/Archaeologist). He worked at the [Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology](/source/Museum_of_Archaeology_and_Anthropology%2C_University_of_Cambridge) from 1988 to his retirement in 2013, and was additionally [Reader](/source/Reader_(academic_rank)) in Archaeology at the [University of Cambridge](/source/University_of_Cambridge) from 2001 to 2013.[1]

## Early life and education

Chippindale was born on 13 October 1951, to Keith and Ruth Chippindale. He was educated at [Sedbergh School](/source/Sedbergh_School), a [public school](/source/Public_school_(United_Kingdom)) in [Sedbergh](/source/Sedbergh), [Yorkshire](/source/Yorkshire). He went on to study at [St John's College, Cambridge](/source/St_John's_College%2C_Cambridge), graduating [Bachelor of Arts](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) (BA Hons). He then studied for a [Doctor of Philosophy](/source/Doctor_of_Philosophy) (PhD) at [Girton College, Cambridge](/source/Girton_College%2C_Cambridge).[2] His [doctoral thesis](/source/Doctoral_thesis) was titled, "The Later Prehistoric rock-engravings of Val Fontanalba, Mont Bego, Tende, Alpes-Maritimes, France" and was completed in 1988.[3]

## Career

Chippindale was a [research fellow](/source/Research_fellow) in archaeology at [Girton College, Cambridge](/source/Girton_College%2C_Cambridge) from 1985 to 1988 and bye-fellow from 1988 to 1991.[2] In 1987, he was appointed assistant [curator](/source/Curator) of the [Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Cambridge](/source/Museum_of_Archaeology_and_Anthropology%2C_University_of_Cambridge).[4] He was promoted to Senior Assistant Curator in 1993.[2] In 2001, he was appointed [reader](/source/Reader_(academic_rank)) in archaeology at the [University of Cambridge](/source/University_of_Cambridge).[4] He concurrently held the positions of reader and curator for British archaeology at the museum.[5] He retired in 2013, and is now reader [emeritus](/source/Emeritus) at the university and a senior fellow of the [McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research](/source/McDonald_Institute_for_Archaeological_Research).[6][7]

Outside of his university career, he served as [editor](/source/Editor-in-chief) of the academic journal *[Antiquity](/source/Antiquity_(journal))* for ten years, from 1987 to 1997.[6]

## Personal life

In 1976, Chippindale married Anne Lowe. Together they had four children; two sons and two daughters. They divorced in 2008. In 2008, he entered into a [civil partnership](/source/Civil_partnership_in_the_United_Kingdom) with Justice Oleka.[2] His brother [Peter Chippindale](/source/Peter_Chippindale) was a journalist and author.

## Honours

On 10 January 1991, Chippindale was elected [Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London](/source/Fellow_of_the_Society_of_Antiquaries_of_London) (FSA).[8]
