# Chris Wardlow

**Christopher Story Wardlow** (12 July 1942 – 11 February 2024) was an English [rugby union](/source/Rugby_union) international.

A [Carlisle RFC](/source/Carlisle_RFC) product, Wardlow was capped six times by [England](/source/England_national_rugby_union_team) and debuted in a win over the [Springboks](/source/South_Africa_national_rugby_union_team) at Twickenham in 1969, substituting injured fullback [Bob Hiller](/source/Bob_Hiller) in the final minutes of the match.[1] He was an England centre in all four Tests of the [1971 Five Nations](/source/1971_Five_Nations_Championship) and in that year's [Centenary match](/source/1971_Scotland_versus_England_rugby_union_match) against Scotland at Murrayfield.[2]

Wardlow, who also played for [Northampton](/source/Northampton_Saints) and [Coventry](/source/Coventry_R.F.C.), made the [British Lions](/source/British_%26_Irish_Lions) squad for the [1971 to New Zealand and Australia](/source/1971_British_Lions_tour_to_New_Zealand_and_Australia) but missed the trip after breaking his jaw while playing for Northern Counties.[3]

Wardlow died from complications of Alzheimer's disease in Carlisle, on 11 February 2024, at the age of 81.[4][5]
