# Chris Stynes

**Christopher Desmond Stynes** (born January 19, 1973) is an American former [Major League Baseball](/source/Major_League_Baseball) [utility player](/source/Utility_pitcher).[1]

## Early life

Christopher Desmond Stynes was born in Queens, New York, and attended [Boca Raton Community High School](/source/Boca_Raton_Community_High_School) in Florida.[2] He attended [Florida Atlantic University](/source/Florida_Atlantic_University).[3]

His grandfather [Joe Stynes](/source/Joe_Stynes) won the [1923 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship](/source/1923_All-Ireland_Senior_Football_Championship); his cousin [Jim Stynes](/source/Jim_Stynes) was a legend for the [Melbourne Football Club](/source/Melbourne_Football_Club) in the [Australian Football League](/source/Australian_Football_League).[4]

## Career

Among the [Minor League Baseball](/source/Minor_League_Baseball) teams that he played for was the [Knoxville Smokies](/source/Knoxville_Smokies).[5][6]

He played in the majors from 1995 to 2004 for the [Kansas City Royals](/source/Kansas_City_Royals),[1] [Cincinnati Reds](/source/Cincinnati_Reds), [Chicago Cubs](/source/Chicago_Cubs), [Boston Red Sox](/source/Boston_Red_Sox), [Colorado Rockies](/source/Colorado_Rockies), [Pittsburgh Pirates](/source/Pittsburgh_Pirates), and [Baltimore Orioles](/source/Baltimore_Orioles).[1]

Noted for his base-running speed, he managed to steal 3 consecutive bases in a single inning (second, third and then home-plate) while a member of the Kansas City Royals on May 12, , during an 8–5 win against the [Seattle Mariners](/source/Seattle_Mariners).[7]

In the [1997 season](/source/1997_Major_League_Baseball_season), Stynes had 7 hits in his first 7 at bats, setting an MLB record for most consecutive hits to start a season. The record was broken in 2021 by [Yermín Mercedes](/source/Yerm%C3%ADn_Mercedes), who went 8-for-8 to start the [2021 season](/source/2021_Major_League_Baseball_season).[8]

Stynes missed nearly a month of play during the [2001 season](/source/2001_Major_League_Baseball_season)[9] after a pitch from [Aaron Sele](/source/Aaron_Sele) hit Stynes in the [cheek](/source/Cheek), breaking the [cheekbone](/source/Zygomatic_bone) in two places.[10]
