# Chris Rob

**Christopher Robinson**, known as **Chris Rob**, is an American musician, originally from [Chicago](/source/Chicago),[1] who currently resides in [Brooklyn](/source/Brooklyn), [New York](/source/New_York_City).[2] Rob, the younger brother of actor-comedian [Craig Robinson](/source/Craig_Robinson_(actor)), attended [Roosevelt University](/source/Roosevelt_University) in Chicago and earned a degree in music.[3]

## Early life

Rob was born and raised in the [South Side](/source/South_Side,_Chicago) of [Chicago](/source/Chicago).[4] Through the early influence of his mother, a classical concert [pianist](/source/Pianist) and [musical educator](/source/Music_education),[5] Rob developed into a [multi-instrumentalist](/source/Multi-instrumentalist) playing the [piano](/source/Piano), [electric piano](/source/Electric_piano), [organ](/source/Organ_(music)), [drums](/source/Drums), [guitar](/source/Guitar), and [bass guitar](/source/Bass_guitar).[6] Rob credits his mother, older brother Craig Robinson, and artists such as, [Herbie Hancock](/source/Herbie_Hancock), [Nina Simone](/source/Nina_Simone), [Daryl Coley](/source/Daryl_Coley), [Steely Dan](/source/Steely_Dan), and [DJ Premier](/source/DJ_Premier) as significant influences of his musical framework.[7]

## Career

Rob performed as the opening act at a pre-[Grammy](/source/Grammy_Award) brunch sponsored by attorney [Londell McMillan](/source/Londell_McMillan) and the Artist Empowerment Coalition; and was also featured on both the ASCAP and BMI showcases in lower Manhattan.[8] While on tour as the keyboardist and backup vocalist, he also took on the position of [musical director](/source/Music_director) for [John Legend](/source/John_Legend)'s '[Get Lifted](/source/Get_Lifted)' Tour.[9]

Chris Rob also performed with [Stevie Wonder](/source/Stevie_Wonder) in Washington D.C. for President [Barack Obama](/source/Barack_Obama)'s inauguration festivities.[10] In addition to his own solo shows, Rob directs the stage for classic [hip hop](/source/Hip_hop) artists including [Pete Rock](/source/Pete_Rock) & [CL Smooth](/source/CL_Smooth), [Black Moon](/source/Black_Moon_(group)), [Talib Kweli](/source/Talib_Kweli), and The Real Live Show.[11] He collaborates heavily with producers like [DJ Spinna](/source/DJ_Spinna) and [Devo Springsteen](/source/Devo_Springsteen).[12] Rob toured with [Atlantic Records](/source/Atlantic_Records)' artist [Laura Izibor](/source/Laura_Izibor) as well as his own older brother, actor/comedian [Craig Robinson](/source/Craig_Robinson_(actor)) (NBC's "[The Office](/source/The_Office_(U.S._TV_series))").[13]
