**Christopher Frank Foss** (born 1946)[1] is a British artist and science fiction [illustrator](/source/Illustrator). He is best known for his [science fiction](/source/Science_fiction) book covers and the black and white illustrations for the original editions of *[The Joy of Sex](/source/The_Joy_of_Sex)*.

## Career

### Early work

Born in 1946 in [Guernsey](/source/Guernsey), Channel Islands,[1] Foss started working there as an artist in his teens, creating signage for local companies.[2] He went to a boarding school in [Dorset](/source/Dorset); his master encouraged him to train for an art scholarship.[3] While studying at [Magdalene College, Cambridge](/source/Magdalene_College,_Cambridge), he started pursuing professional magazine commissions, including the then recently launched *[Penthouse](/source/Penthouse_(magazine))* magazine.[2]

### Science fiction illustrations

Books featuring Foss illustrations include the 1970s British [paperback](/source/Paperback) covers for [Isaac Asimov](/source/Isaac_Asimov)'s [Foundation Trilogy](/source/Foundation_Trilogy), several of [Edmund Cooper](/source/Edmund_Cooper)'s novels, and [E. E. "Doc" Smith](/source/E._E._Smith)'s [Lensman](/source/Lensman) and *[Skylark](/source/Skylark_(series))* series. Some of the art he did produce was specific to the stories and some examples of this are the covers he did for the Grafton publications of the Demon Princes novels by [Jack Vance](/source/Jack_Vance) in the late 1980s, *[Star King](/source/Star_King)*, *[The Killing Machine](/source/The_Killing_Machine)*, *[The Palace of Love](/source/The_Palace_of_Love)*, *[The Face](/source/The_Face_(Vance))* and *[The Book of Dreams](/source/The_Book_of_Dreams_(Vance_novel))*.

Not being a fan of science fiction, Foss typically did not read the books he illustrated, preferring to paint scenes entirely from his imagination.[4]

Foss designed the craft for the a [Alejandro Jodorowsky](/source/Alejandro_Jodorowsky)'s intended film version of the science fiction novel *[Dune](/source/Dune_(novel))* by author [Frank Herbert](/source/Frank_Herbert).[5] Foss delivered several conceptual studies published in the book *21st Century Foss*, containing a foreword by Jodorowsky. The project failed. In 1977 Foss worked for several months on studies for the movie *[Alien](/source/Alien_(film))*, which were ultimately not used in that film, and also did some designs of the planet Krypton for the movie *[Superman](/source/Superman_(1978_film))*. Some of his crystal structures for the planet were realised in the movie, although they were used as ice-structures.[citation needed]

During this period Chris Foss illustrated the sleeve of the album *[Clear Air Turbulence](/source/Clear_Air_Turbulence_(album))* for the [Ian Gillan Band](/source/Ian_Gillan_Band).[citation needed]

Painter [Glenn Brown](/source/Glenn_Brown_(artist)) controversially appropriated individual space scene paintings by Foss[2][6] and in the one case copying and altering it (*Exercise One (for Ian Curtis)*, 1995) and in the other, leaving it entirely unchanged (*Dark Angel (for Ian Curtis)*, 2002).

Chris Foss created much of the colour concept art for Sweetpea Entertainment's *[Traveller](/source/Traveller_(role-playing_game))* franchise, as produced by [Imperium Games](/source/Imperium_Games).[7]: 332 He produced 12 pages of artwork for the new *Traveller* edition's first supplement, *Starships* (1996).[7]: 332 He also illustrated a number of covers for Imperium's *Traveller*.[7]: 333
