The **Chorrillos Military School** ([Spanish](/source/Spanish_language): ***Escuela Militar de Chorrillos***) is the institution in charge of the undergraduate education of [officers](/source/Officer_(armed_forces)) of the [Peruvian Army](/source/Peruvian_Army).

## Overview

The school was opened in 1830 during the first government of [Agustín Gamarra](/source/Agust%C3%ADn_Gamarra) and was relocated to [Chorrillos](/source/Chorrillos_District), [Lima](/source/Lima), [Peru](/source/Peru), in 1888, hence its name.[1]

As of 2019[\[update\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Chorrillos_Military_School&action=edit), its director was [Brigade General](/source/Brigadier_General) Carlos Rabanal Calderon.[2]

It was also the *[alma mater](/source/Alma_mater)* of [Manuel Noriega](/source/Manuel_Noriega) (1962),[3] [Vladimiro Montesinos](/source/Vladimiro_Montesinos) (1966),[4] and [Hugo Chávez Frías](/source/Hugo_Ch%C3%A1vez_Fr%C3%ADas) (1974).[5]

It contains the Escuela de Comandos (Commando School). In 1997, a replica of the Japanese Diplomatic Residency was secretly built there. Tunnels were dug and the rescue plan was practiced again and again until perfect for the *[Operation Chavin de Huantar](/source/Operation_Chavin_de_Huantar)* that ended the [Japanese embassy hostage crisis](/source/Japanese_embassy_hostage_crisis). As of 2008[\[update\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Chorrillos_Military_School&action=edit) it still existed and was considered a monument to those who took part in the rescue, and sometimes still used in training.[6]
