Abbey in Cholsey, Oxfordshire, England

**Cholsey Abbey** was an [Anglo-Saxon](/source/Anglo-Saxons) abbey in [Cholsey](/source/Cholsey) in what is now the [English](/source/England) county of [Oxfordshire](/source/Oxfordshire) (formerly [Berkshire](/source/Berkshire)), which was founded between 993 and 997 by King [Æthelred the Unready](/source/%C3%86thelred_the_Unready) on land which he had acquired from his mother, [Ælfthryth](/source/%C3%86lfthryth_(wife_of_Edgar)). It was dedicated to Æthelred's half-brother, [Edward the Martyr](/source/Edward_the_Martyr), and its first abbot was [Germanus](/source/Germanus_of_Winchester). It may have been sacked by the Vikings in 1006, and by the time of the [Norman Conquest](/source/Norman_Conquest) in 1066 it had disappeared.[1]
