**Chittagong-9** is a constituency represented in the [Jatiya Sangsad](/source/Jatiya_Sangsad) (National Parliament) of [Bangladesh](/source/Bangladesh).

## Boundaries

The constituency encompasses parts of the [Chattogram City Corporation](/source/Chattogram_City_Corporation), specifically Wards [15](/source/Bagmaniram_Ward), [16](/source/Chawkbazar_Ward), [17](/source/West_Bakalia_Ward), [18](/source/East_Bakalia_Ward), [19](/source/South_Bakalia_Ward), [20](/source/Dewan_Bazar_Ward), [21](/source/Jamal_khan_Ward), [22](/source/Enayet_Bazar_Ward), [23](/source/North_Pathantooly_Ward), [31](/source/Alkaran_Ward), [32](/source/Andarkilla_Ward), [33](/source/Firingee_Bazar_Ward), [34](/source/Patharghata_Ward), and [35](/source/Boxirhat_Ward), integrating these areas under a single administrative and electoral boundary.[1][2]

## History

The constituency was created for the first general elections in newly independent Bangladesh, held in 1973.

Ahead of the [2008 general election](/source/2008_Bangladeshi_general_election), the [Election Commission](/source/Bangladesh_Election_Commission) redrew constituency boundaries to reflect population changes revealed by the [2001 Bangladesh census](/source/2001_Bangladesh_census).[3] The 2008 reapportionment added one seat to Chittagong City and altered the boundaries of the three other seats in the city, including this one.[4][5]

Ahead of the [2014 general election](/source/2014_Bangladeshi_general_election), the Election Commission renumbered the seat for [Sandwip Upazila](/source/Sandwip_Upazila) from Chittagong-16 to Chittagong-3, bumping up by one the suffix of the former constituency of that name and the higher numbered constituencies in the district. Thus Chittagong-9 covers the area previously covered by Chittagong-8. Previously Chittagong-9 encompassed [Chittagong City Corporation](/source/Chittagong_City_Corporation) wards 11 through 14, and 24 through 26, and part of ward 8.[1][2]

In the [2018 general election](/source/2018_Bangladeshi_general_election), the constituency was one of six chosen by lottery to use [electronic voting machines](/source/Electronic_voting_machines).[6]
