'''Chipmunk Mountain''' is a [mountain](/source/mountain) in southwestern [British Columbia](/source/British_Columbia), Canada, located {{nowrap|{{Convert|23|km|mi|abbr=on}}}} southwest of [Bralorne](/source/Bralorne%2C_British_Columbia). It has an elevation of {{nowrap|{{Convert|2390|m|ft|abbr=on}}}} and a [topographic prominence](/source/topographic_prominence) of {{nowrap|{{Convert|540|m|ft|abbr=on}}}}, making it the highest point on an east-trending [scree](/source/scree)d ridge. This horn-like [rocky tower](/source/Rock_pinnacle) is similar to [The Black Tusk](/source/The_Black_Tusk) in [Garibaldi Provincial Park](/source/Garibaldi_Provincial_Park).

The mountain was named in 1920 by James Landsborough after a summit party had given lunch scraps to a [chipmunk](/source/chipmunk).<ref name="AD">{{BCGNIS|id=26766|name=Chipmunk Mountain|accessdate=2012-09-16}}</ref>

==Geology==
Chipmunk Mountain is the remains of an extinct volcano that formed during the [Miocene](/source/Miocene) epoch.<ref name="AD"/><ref name="SI">{{cite journal|last=Fretschmar|first=Laura M.|title=The Vermont Geological Society Spring Meeting for the Presentation of Student Papers|journal=Miocene Volcanism in Southwestern British Columbia: Geochemistry and Tectonic Implications|publisher=The Green Mountain Geologist|volume=21|number=1|pages=7, 8|year=1994}}</ref> The [volcanic rock](/source/volcanic_rock)s comprising Chipmunk Mountain crop out in a {{nowrap|{{Convert|12|km2|mi2|abbr=on}}}} area and consist of [pyroclastic rock](/source/pyroclastic_rock)s, [sills](/source/sill_(geology)) and [dikes](/source/dike_(geology)). These volcanic rocks range from [basalt](/source/basalt)s to [rhyolite](/source/rhyolite)s, with the majority classifying as [basaltic andesite](/source/basaltic_andesite)s and [andesite](/source/andesite)s. They are closely related to the [calc-alkaline](/source/calc-alkaline) volcanic centres of the [Pemberton Volcanic Belt](/source/Pemberton_Volcanic_Belt), indicating the volcanic rocks comprising Chipmunk Mountain were created as a result of [volcanism](/source/volcanism) in the [Canadian Cascade Arc](/source/Canadian_Cascade_Arc). The volcanic rocks have been dated to be {{nowrap|26.8 ± 1.4}} million years old, which correlates with the time of Pemberton Belt volcanism.<ref name="SI"/>
