==Career==
Chai graduated from [National Taiwan University](/source/National_Taiwan_University) with a [Bachelor of Science](/source/Bachelor_of_Science) in mathematics in 1978. He then earned his [Ph.D.](/source/Ph.D.) in mathematics from [Harvard University](/source/Harvard_University) in 1984. His doctoral thesis, ''Compactification of the Siegel Moduli Schemes'', was completed under the supervision of [David Mumford](/source/David_Mumford).<ref>{{MathGenealogy|23857}}</ref> Chai was the Francis J.
