'''Chilodontaidae''' is a [taxonomic](/source/Taxonomy_(biology)) [family](/source/Family_(taxonomy)) of mostly small deepwater [sea snail](/source/sea_snail)s, [marine](/source/Marine_(ocean)) [gastropod](/source/gastropod) [mollusc](/source/mollusc)s in the clade [Vetigastropoda](/source/Vetigastropoda) (according to the [taxonomy of the Gastropoda by Bouchet & Rocroi, 2005](/source/Taxonomy_of_the_Gastropoda_(Bouchet_%26_Rocroi%2C_2005))).

== Taxonomy ==
The family was previously in the superfamily [Neritoidea](/source/Neritoidea) in the order [Neritopsina](/source/Neritopsina) and the superorder Neritaemorphi.

=== 2005 taxonomy ===
This family consists of three following subfamilies (according to the [taxonomy of the Gastropoda by Bouchet & Rocroi, 2005](/source/Taxonomy_of_the_Gastropoda_(Bouchet_%26_Rocroi%2C_2005))):
*[Chilodontainae](/source/Chilodontainae) <small>Wenz, 1938</small>
*[Calliotropinae](/source/Calliotropinae) <small>Hickman & McLean, 1990</small>
*[Cataeginae](/source/Cataeginae) <small>McLean & Quinn, 1987</small>

=== 2007 taxonomy ===
A [molecular phylogeny](/source/molecular_phylogeny)-based taxonomy of the Seguenzioidea was published by Kano (2007).<ref name="Kano 2007">Kano Y. (2007). "Vetigastropod phylogeny and a new concept of Seguenzioidea: independent evolution of copulatory organs in the deep-sea habitats". ''[Zoologica Scripta](/source/Zoologica_Scripta)'' '''37'''(1): 1–21. {{doi|10.1111/j.1463-6409.2007.00316.x}}</ref>

It was proposed to rename the family Chilodontidae <small>Wenz, 1938</small> as "Chilodontaidae" because it was a homonym of the fish family "Chilodontidae" <small>Eigenmann, 1912</small>, but a 2024 [ICZN](/source/ICZN) ruling instead changed the name of the fish family to [Chilodidae](/source/Chilodidae), so the gastropod family is still to be kept as Chilodontidae.<ref>Opinion 2502 (Case 3555) – Chilodontidae Bronn, 1859 (Ciliophora), Chilodontinae Eigenmann, 1910 (Pisces, Characiformes) and Chilodontinae Wenz, 1938 (Mollusca, Gastropoda): homonymy between family-group names resolved. The Bulletin of Zoological Nomenclature 81(1): 133-136 (31 December 2024) doi:10.21805/bzn.v81.a025</ref>

The subfamilies Calliotropinae Hickman & McLean, 1990 and Cataeginae McLean & Quinn, 1987 were raised to family levels as the [Calliotropidae](/source/Calliotropidae) and the [Cataegidae](/source/Cataegidae).
