It is affiliated with the [Medical College of Wisconsin](/source/Medical_College_of_Wisconsin)[2] and is a member of the Children's Wisconsin health system, one of two of the children's hospitals in the system. The hospital provides comprehensive pediatric specialties and subspecialties to infants, children, teens, and young adults aged 0–21[3] throughout the Wisconsin region. The hospital features an [ACS](/source/American_College_of_Surgeons) verified [level I pediatric trauma center](/source/Level_I_trauma_center), one of two in the state.[4] Its regional [pediatric](/source/Pediatric_intensive-care_unit) [intensive-care unit](/source/Pediatric_intensive_care_unit) and [neonatal intensive care units](/source/Neonatal_intensive-care_unit) serve the region. The hospital also has a rooftop helipad for critical pediatric transport. The hospital consists of two campuses, the main campus is located in Milwaukee and a second campus is located in the [Fox Cities](/source/Fox_Cities). Chorus Community Health Plans, an affiliate of Children's Wisconsin, offers [Medicaid](/source/Medicaid) and [Marketplace](/source/Health_insurance_marketplace) health insurance plans.[5] ## History The hospital was originally established as Milwaukee Children's Hospital on March 16, 1894. Three months later, it became known as Children's Free Hospital. In 1985, the [hospital](/source/Hospital) became known as Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. The hospital provides [primary care](/source/Primary_care), [specialty care](/source/Specialty_(medicine)), [urgent care](/source/Urgent_care), [emergency care](/source/Emergency_medicine), [community health](/source/Community_health) services, [foster](/source/Foster_care) and [adoption](/source/Adoption) services, child and family [counseling](/source/Counseling_psychology), child [advocacy](/source/Advocacy) services and family resource centers. In November 2020, [Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson](/source/Dwayne_Johnson) collaborated with [Microsoft](/source/Microsoft) and billionaire [Bill Gates](/source/Bill_Gates) to donate [Xbox Series X](/source/Xbox_Series_X_and_Series_S) consoles to Children's Wisconsin along with 19 other children's hospitals throughout the country.[6][7][8] In addition to the Milwaukee location, there is a second location in [Neenah](/source/Neenah,_Wisconsin), [Wisconsin](/source/Wisconsin), on the campus of [ThedaCare Regional Medical Center-Neenah](/source/ThedaCare_Regional_Medical_Center-Neenah) which serves the [Appleton](/source/Appleton,_Wisconsin), [Green Bay](/source/Green_Bay,_Wisconsin), and [Oshkosh](/source/Oshkosh,_Wisconsin) metro areas.[9] Children's Wisconsin was ranked No. 4 in the nation by *[Parents](/source/Parents_(magazine))* magazine in its March 2013 issue.[10] The hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was highlighted by *[Time](/source/Time_(magazine))* magazine for its exceptional care for preemies.[11] ## Awards As of 2022, Children's Wisconsin has placed nationally in eight ranked pediatric specialties on *[U.S. News & World Report](/source/U.S._News_%26_World_Report)*. The publication also ranked the hospital as the #1 children's hospital in Wisconsin.
