He was seemingly but a puppet of the [mayor of the palace](/source/mayor_of_the_palace), [Pepin of Heristal](/source/Pepin_of_Heristal), though his ''[placita](/source/placita)'' show him making judicial decisions of his own will, even against the [Arnulfing](/source/Arnulfing) clan.  His nickname has no comprehensible justification except possibly as a result of these judgements, but the ''[Liber Historiae Francorum](/source/Liber_Historiae_Francorum)'' calls him a "famous man" and "the glorious lord of good memory, Childebert, the just king."<ref>''[Monumenta Germaniae Historica](/source/Monumenta_Germaniae_Historica), Scriptorum rerum Merovingicarum'' vol. He had a son named Dagobert, who succeeded him, as [Dagobert III](/source/Dagobert_III). His wife was Ermenechildis, also known as Edonne. It is possible, though not likely, that [Chlothar IV](/source/Chlothar_IV) was also his son.  He spent almost his entire life in a royal villa on the [Oise](/source/Oise_(river)).

In 708, during his reign of sixteen years, the [bishop of Avranches](/source/bishop_of_Avranches), [Saint Aubert](/source/Aubert_of_Avranches), founded the [monastery](/source/monastery) of [Mont-Saint-Michel](/source/Mont-Saint-Michel) supposedly at the urging of the [Archangel Michael](/source/Archangel_Michael).

Upon his death on 23 April 711, southern [Gaul](/source/Gaul) began to grow independent: [Burgundy](/source/Kingdom_of_Burgundy) under Bishop [Savaric of Auxerre](/source/Savaric_of_Auxerre), [Aquitaine](/source/Aquitaine) under Duke [Odo the Great](/source/Odo_the_Great), and [Provence](/source/Provence) under [Antenor](/source/Antenor_of_Provence). He died at [St Etienne](/source/St_Etienne), [Loire](/source/Loire_(department)), France. He was buried in the church of St Stephen at [Choisy-au-Bac](/source/Choisy-au-Bac), near [Compiègne](/source/Compi%C3%A8gne).
