**Joseph Henry "Chief" Jones** (December 18, 1879 – October 30, 1959[1]) was a Canadian-American professional [ice hockey](/source/Ice_hockey) [goaltender](/source/Goaltender_(ice_hockey)) who played in various [professional](/source/Professional) and [amateur](/source/Amateur_sports) leagues during the first decade of the 1900s, including the [National Hockey Association](/source/National_Hockey_Association) (NHA) and [International Professional Hockey League](/source/International_Professional_Hockey_League) (IPHL). He was a "full blooded Indian" who hailed from [Michigan](/source/Michigan).[2]

## Career

Amongst the teams Jones played with during his career in professional hockey were the [Cobalt Silver Kings](/source/Cobalt_Silver_Kings) of the NHA and [TPHL](/source/Timiskaming_Professional_Hockey_League), and the Waterloo Colts of the [OPHL](/source/Ontario_Professional_Hockey_League). Before he played with Cobalt and Waterloo, he had started out his career in [Port Arthur, Ontario](/source/Port_Arthur,_Ontario) in 1901.[3] He also played with the St. Paul Victorias in [St. Paul, Minnesota](/source/St._Paul,_Minnesota) and in the [International Professional Hockey League](/source/International_Professional_Hockey_League) with a team in [Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan](/source/Sault_Ste._Marie,_Michigan), the [Michigan Soo Indians](/source/Michigan_Soo_Indians), from the league's inaugural year in [1904–05](/source/1904%E2%80%9305_IPHL_season) to [1906–07](/source/1906%E2%80%9307_IPHL_season), and then independently until the 1907–08 season, when he signed with the Cobalt Hockey Club. He played for Waterloo in the OPHL the following hockey season.[4] He retired after that season.[5]

After his playing career was finished, Jones took to coaching. In 1914–15, he was coaching a team in [Detroit](/source/Detroit). At the onset of the season, Jones described for the [Detroit Free Press](/source/Detroit_Free_Press) that his own success as a goaltender had relied on him not waiting for the puck to come to him, but to instead go out to meet the object of play.[3]
