The '''chestnut capuchin''' or '''chestnut weeper capuchin''' ('''''Cebus castaneus''''') is a species of [capuchin monkey](/source/capuchin_monkey) from northeastern [Brazil](/source/Brazil), southern [Guyana](/source/Guyana), [Suriname](/source/Suriname), and [French Guiana](/source/French_Guiana).<ref name=":0">{{Cite mdd |title=''Cebus olivaceus'' Schomburgk, 1848|id=1000839|access-date=2021-12-06}}</ref>

== Taxonomy ==
It was described in 1851 as a subspecies of the [wedge-capped capuchin](/source/wedge-capped_capuchin) (''C. olivaceus''). However, a 2012 study found grounds to at least tentatively recognize it as a distinct species.<ref>{{Cite journal|last1=Boubli|first1=Jean P.|last2=Rylands|first2=Anthony B.|last3=Farias|first3=Izeni P.|last4=Alfaro|first4=Michael E.|last5=Alfaro|first5=Jessica Lynch|date=2012|title=Cebus Phylogenetic Relationships: A Preliminary Reassessment of the Diversity of the Untufted Capuchin Monkeys|url=https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/ajp.21998|journal=American Journal of Primatology|language=en|volume=74|issue=4|pages=381–393|doi=10.1002/ajp.21998|pmid=22311697 |s2cid=12171529 |issn=1098-2345|url-access=subscription}}</ref> The [American Society of Mammalogists](/source/American_Society_of_Mammalogists), [IUCN Red List](/source/IUCN_Red_List), and [ITIS](/source/Integrated_Taxonomic_Information_System) all follow this classification.<ref name=":0" /><ref>{{Cite iucn|last1=Boubli |first1=J.P. |last2=Urbani |first2=B. |last3=Lynch Alfaro |first3=J.W. |last4=Laroque |first4=P.O. |name-list-style=amp  |year=2021 |title=''Cebus olivaceus'' |amends=2020|article-number=e.T81384371A191708662 |doi=10.2305/IUCN.UK.2021-1.RLTS.T81384371A191708662.en |access-date=4 September 2022}}</ref>

== Distribution ==
It is found in northeastern [Brazil](/source/Brazil), southern [Guyana](/source/Guyana), and most of [Suriname](/source/Suriname) and [French Guiana](/source/French_Guiana). It inhabits the uplands of the [Guiana Shield](/source/Guiana_Shield) north of the [Amazon River](/source/Amazon_River), east of the [Rio Negro](/source/Rio_Negro_(Amazon)), limited on both sides by the [Branco River](/source/Branco_River), and from here ranges north, east of the [Orinoco](/source/Orinoco) and [Ventuari](/source/Ventuari_River) rivers, to Guyana. Its range still remains poorly known.<ref name=iucn/>
