The use of ''cheopji'' began after Baljaegaeheok ({{Korean|hangul=발제개혁|hanja=髮制改革|labels=no}}; a reformation that prohibited [gache](/source/gache) hair style, then promoted [chignon](/source/Chignon_(hairstyle)) hair style) proclaimed by [Yeongjo of Joseon](/source/Yeongjo_of_Joseon).
