**Chengmai County** ([Chinese](/source/Chinese_language): 澄迈县; [pinyin](/source/Pinyin): *Chéngmài Xiàn*) is a [county](/source/County_(China)) in [Hainan](/source/Hainan), China. It is one of four [counties](/source/County_(People's_Republic_of_China)) of Hainan. Its postal code is 571900. In 2002, its population was 490,800.[2]

## History

The first record of Chengmai County is in 110 BC, when it referred to as Guo County in one of [Emperor Wu of Han](/source/Emperor_Wu_of_Han)'s records. The county acquired its current name under the [Sui dynasty](/source/Sui_dynasty) reorganisation of 607. It was also recorded during the [Ming dynasty](/source/Ming_dynasty).

## Geography

Located in northwest [Hainan](/source/Hainan), it is 56 km (35 mi) wide (east to west) and 70 km (43 mi) long (north to south). It has a total land area of 2,067.6 km2 (798.3 sq mi). Climate-wise, it is [tropical](/source/Tropical) with ample [sunshine](/source/Sunshine) and moderate [rainfall](/source/Rainfall) all year round; on average, the county receives 2060.5 hours of sunshine and 1,756 mm (69.1 in) of rain each year. The average annual temperature is 23.7 °C (74.7 °F).[3]

With a total land area of 206.7 km2 (79.8 sq mi), [melons](/source/Melons) and other tropical crops are grown around the county.

More than 20 rivers flow through the county, providing 17.4×10^9 m3 (610×10^9 cu ft) of water per year.

### Jinjiang Town

The main settlement in the county is Jinjiang. It is located directly on the north side of the [Nandu River](/source/Nandu_River) and essentially occupies the south face of a large hill. The old section is located by the river with newer buildings further up. The backside of the hill is currently under development with mostly high-rise apartments being built. Many government buildings are situated on the top of the hill. Near the centre of the hill, there is a large park.

## Economy

The main industry is [mining](/source/Mining), with more than ten resources available within the county including [quartz](/source/Quartz), [stone](/source/Rock_(geology)), [limestone](/source/Limestone), [crystals](/source/Crystals), [gold](/source/Gold), [silver](/source/Silver), [peat](/source/Peat), [zinc](/source/Zinc), [aluminium](/source/Aluminium), [iron ore](/source/Iron_ore), [kaolin](/source/Kaolin), and [manganese](/source/Manganese). Over 5 billion tonnes of quartz are still unmined in the county, with an average grade of 99.5% [silicon](/source/Silicon). There are also nearly 11 million tonnes of [limestone](/source/Limestone) remaining in addition to crystal deposits 5.5 km (3.4 mi) long and 3 km (1.9 mi) wide and around 80,000,000 tonnes of [kaolin](/source/Kaolin).

[Fishing](/source/Fishing) also makes up a large part, with the county possessing 89.8 km (55.8 mi) of coastline. Apart from farm fishing, marine catches include [mackerel](/source/Mackerel), [redfish](/source/Redfish), [croaker fish](/source/Croaker_fish), [grouper](/source/Grouper), [pomfret](/source/Pomfret), [tuna](/source/Tuna), [squid](/source/Squid), [cuttlefish](/source/Cuttlefish), [lobster](/source/Lobster) and [shrimp](/source/Shrimp), are fished in the harbour at Tu Beach. The diverse and populous fish are a result of a nutrient-rich [sediment](/source/Sediment) at the bottom of the harbour.

## Demographics

The [Han people](/source/Han_Chinese) account for 99.5% of the population of the county.

### Longevity

The people of Chengmai County live to an average of 77.79 years. Among the population are 215 [centenarians](/source/Centenarian). The proportion of centenarians compared to the rest of the county's population, and the overall number, ranks highest of all cities and counties in China.[1][9]

Of the total 565,000 people living in the county, 18,500 are more than 80 years old, 896 of which are couples.[1][9]
