'''Chenel''' is a white [South African wine](/source/South_African_wine) [grape variety](/source/grape_variety) that was produced by a [crossing](/source/crossing_(vine)) of [Chenin blanc](/source/Chenin_blanc) and [Trebbiano](/source/Trebbiano). The variety was produced in 1973 by [Christiaan Johannes Orffer](/source/Christiaan_Johannes_Orffer) (1926–2008) at the [Elsenburg Agricultural Training Institute](/source/Elsenburg_Agricultural_Training_Institute).<ref name="wine grapes">J. It was the first domestic South African grape varietal to be introduced after Pinotage.
