It was constructed by Perak River Hydro-Electric Power Company Ltd  and completed in 1930.{{sfn|Central Electricity Board of the Federation of Malaya|1963|p=11}}<ref>Detailed descriptions of the scheme appear in the Minutes of the Institute of Civil Engineers, London, Volume 239, Issue 1935, 1935, pp. 253-312 and in the Architectural Review, Volume 75, No. 446, London, January 1934.</ref> The scheme was designed by consulting engineers Rendel, Palmer & Tritton of London and Vattenbyggnadsbyran (VBB) of Stockholm, Sweden. It was the first major [hydroelectric dam](/source/hydroelectric_dam) and power station in [Malaysia](/source/Malaysia). It was preceded by two stations on Malaya's rivers; the 800kw Ulu Gombak station in [Selangor](/source/Selangor) (1905) that was used to provide [Kuala Lumpur](/source/Kuala_Lumpur)'s first electricity, and the Sungei Besi Tin Mines Ltd scheme at [Ulu Langat](/source/Ulu_Langat) that was purchased by FMS Electrical Department in 1929.{{sfn|Central Electricity Board of the Federation of Malaya|1963|p=11}}

The Chenderoh plant was constructed in tandem with a steam power station at [Malim Nawar](/source/Malim_Nawar), 65 km south of Chenderoh, that was commissioned in 1928.<ref>Report of Badan Warisan Malaysia; Ipoh Echo Archive, 1 February 2013</ref> Between them, the stations supplied power to [Kinta Valley](/source/Kinta_Valley)'s [tin mining](/source/tin_mining) industry and associated settlements.
