# Chen Ta-ching

**Chen Ta-ching** (; 8 October 1904 - 22 August 1973) was a Chinese [National Revolutionary Army](/source/National_Revolutionary_Army) general during the [Second Sino-Japanese War](/source/Second_Sino-Japanese_War) and the [Chinese Civil War](/source/Chinese_Civil_War). After the [Republic of China government withdrew to Taiwan](/source/Retreat_of_the_government_of_the_Republic_of_China_to_Taiwan), he served as [Governor](/source/Taiwan_Provincial_Government#List_of_Governors) of [Taiwan Province](/source/Taiwan_(Republic_of_China_province)) 1969 to 1972 and the [Minister of National Defense](/source/Ministry_of_National_Defense_(Taiwan)#List_of_ministers) from 1972 to 1973 before retiring due to health reasons.

## Biography

In 1972, Chen was made [Minister of Defense](/source/Ministry_of_National_Defense_(Republic_of_China)) for Taiwan. In June of that year, he was reportedly critically ill and it was suggested that he may have been unable to serve in the position.[1]

He died from cancer in Taipei the following year and was posthumously promoted to colonel general.[2][3]
