# Chen Chun-han

**Chen Chun-han** (; June 15, 1983 – February 10, 2024)[1] was a Taiwanese lawyer and legal scholar known for his advocacy for [disability rights](/source/Disability_rights_movement). He was a post-doctoral researcher at the [Academia Sinica](/source/Academia_Sinica)'s Institute of Legal Studies and a member of the [Executive Yuan](/source/Executive_Yuan)'s Subcommittee on the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights.[2][3]

## Early life and education

Chen was born in [Hsinchu](/source/Hsinchu) on June 15, 1983, with [spinal muscular atrophy](/source/Spinal_muscular_atrophy). His movement was restricted to one finger, his mouth, and his eyes.[4]

Despite his disability, Chen graduated from [National Hsinchu Senior High School](/source/National_Hsinchu_Senior_High_School) and studied accounting and law at [National Taiwan University](/source/National_Taiwan_University), where earned a [B.A.](/source/B.A.) in accounting and his [LL.B.](/source/LL.B.) and [LL.M.](/source/LL.M.) degrees. He then completed graduate studies in the United States at [Harvard University](/source/Harvard_University), where he earned a second LL.M. from [Harvard Law School](/source/Harvard_Law_School) in 2012, and the [University of Michigan](/source/University_of_Michigan), where he earned a third LL.M. in 2017 and his [Doctor of Juridical Science](/source/Doctor_of_Juridical_Science) (S.J.D.) from the [University of Michigan Law School](/source/University_of_Michigan_Law_School) in 2022.[5]

Chen's doctoral dissertation at Michigan, completed under [Steven Ratner](/source/Steven_R._Ratner), was titled, "Equality, Non-Discrimination, and Reasonable Accommodation: The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities through Comparative Perspectives".[6] He was licensed to practice law in [New York](/source/New_York_(state)).[7][8][9]

## Death

On February 10, 2024, Chen died at the [National Taiwan University Hospital](/source/National_Taiwan_University_Hospital) Hsinchu North District Branch after fighting a cold-related lung infection.[10]
