He graduated from [National Taiwan Normal University](/source/National_Taiwan_Normal_University) with a [Bachelor of Arts](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) (B.A.) in geography in 1970 and obtained a master's degree in [anthropology](/source/anthropology) from [National Taiwan University](/source/National_Taiwan_University) in 1975.
