Reclaimed area along the bank of the River Thames in London, England

Chelsea Embankment

**Chelsea Embankment** is part of the [Thames Embankment](/source/Thames_Embankment), a road and [walkway](/source/Walkway) along the north bank of the [River Thames](/source/River_Thames) in [central London](/source/Central_London), England.

The western end of Chelsea Embankment, including a stretch of [Cheyne Walk](/source/Cheyne_Walk), is in the [Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea](/source/Royal_Borough_of_Kensington_and_Chelsea); the eastern end, including Grosvenor Road and [Millbank](/source/Millbank), is in the [City of Westminster](/source/City_of_Westminster). Beneath the road lies the main low-level interceptor sewer taking waste water from west London eastwards towards [Beckton](/source/Beckton).

[Chelsea Bridge](/source/Chelsea_Bridge) and [Albert Bridge](/source/Albert_Bridge%2C_London) are to the south. [Royal Hospital Chelsea](/source/Royal_Hospital_Chelsea) is to the north. [Sloane Square](/source/Sloane_Square_tube_station) is the closest tube station, located to the north.

## History

The embankment was completed to a design by [Joseph Bazalgette](/source/Joseph_Bazalgette) and was part of the [Metropolitan Board of Works](/source/Metropolitan_Board_of_Works)' grand scheme to provide London with a modern [sewage system](/source/London_sewerage_system). It was opened on 9 May 1874 by [Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh](/source/Alfred%2C_Duke_of_Saxe-Coburg_and_Gotha).[1]

In 2025, a new section of the embankment, designed by architects [Hawkins\Brown](/source/Hawkins%5CBrown) with an installation by Florian Roithmayer, was opened to the public as part of the [Thames Tideway Tunnel](/source/Thames_Tideway_Tunnel) project.[2]

### Roper's Garden

Between [Chelsea Old Church](/source/Chelsea_Old_Church) and [Crosby Hall](/source/Crosby_Hall%2C_London) is a small [public park](/source/Public_park), Roper's Garden. In the [Tudor period](/source/Tudor_era), the site was an orchard belonging to Sir [Thomas More](/source/Thomas_More) who gave it to his daughter, [Margaret](/source/Margaret_Roper) as part of her settlement on her marriage to [William Roper](/source/William_Roper), from whom the garden's name derives.[3] Heavily built up in the 19th century, the majority of buildings on the site were destroyed by a [parachute mine](/source/Parachute_mine) dropped by the [Luftwaffe](/source/Luftwaffe) in April 1941.[4] In the post-war period, it was determined to redevelop the site as a small park. Designs were produced by [Peter Shepheard](/source/Peter_Shepheard) and the garden opened in 1964. The garden contains two sculptures, *Awakening*, an early work by [Gilbert Ledward](/source/Gilbert_Ledward) dating from 1915;[a] and an unfinished nude of 1950 by [Jacob Epstein](/source/Jacob_Epstein), who had a studio near the site. The garden is listed at Grade II on the [Register of Historic Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England](/source/Register_of_Historic_Parks_and_Gardens_of_Special_Historic_Interest_in_England).[6]
