**Charles Tanfield** (born 17 November 1996) is a British [racing cyclist](/source/Cycle_sport), who rides for [UCI Continental team](/source/UCI_Continental_team) [Saint Piran](/source/Saint_Piran_(cycling_team)) and the Great Britain national track cycling team.

He competed at the [2024 Summer Olympics](/source/2024_Summer_Olympics) in Paris winning the silver medal in the [Team pursuit](/source/Team_pursuit). He also competed at the [2020 Summer Olympics](/source/2020_Summer_Olympics) in Tokyo in the [team pursuit](/source/Team_pursuit).[5]

Tanfield was the [2018 Commonwealth Games](/source/2018_Commonwealth_Games) individual pursuit champion, the [2018 World Championships](/source/2018_UCI_Track_Cycling_World_Championships) team pursuit world champion and [2024 UEC European Track Championships](/source/2024_UEC_European_Track_Championships) team pursuit champion.

## Early life

Tanfield grew up in [Great Ayton](/source/Great_Ayton) in [North Yorkshire](/source/North_Yorkshire).[6] He attended [Stokesley School](/source/Stokesley_School).[7]

## Career

He rode in the [men's team pursuit event](/source/2018_UCI_Track_Cycling_World_Championships_%E2%80%93_Men's_team_pursuit) at the [2018 UCI Track Cycling World Championships](/source/2018_UCI_Track_Cycling_World_Championships), winning the gold medal.[8][9] Tanfield won silver in the [team pursuit](/source/Team_pursuit) and gold in the [individual pursuit](/source/Individual_pursuit) at the [2018 Commonwealth Games](/source/2018_Commonwealth_Games) where he set of time of 4:11.455,[10] the third fastest individual pursuit time in history. Tanfield went on to claim a second silver in the [team pursuit](/source/Cycling_at_the_2022_Commonwealth_Games_%E2%80%93_Men's_team_pursuit) at the [2022 Commonwealth Games](/source/2022_Commonwealth_Games).[11]

Tanfield won two more national titles at the [2023 British Cycling National Track Championships](/source/2023_British_Cycling_National_Track_Championships) bringing his total to five at the time. He won the individual pursuit for the second time and the team pursuit for the third time.[12]

He went on to win a silver medal at the [2024 Summer Olympics](/source/2024_Summer_Olympics) in the team pursuit, his second Olympic Games.

## Personal life

His brother [Harry Tanfield](/source/Harry_Tanfield), who is two years older than him, is also a cyclist and a silver medallist at the [2018 Commonwealth Games](/source/2018_Commonwealth_Games) road time trial.[13]
