# Charlie Short

**Charles Short** (after 1866 – after 1891) was an English professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who played in the [Football Alliance](/source/Football_Alliance) for [Small Heath](/source/Birmingham_City_F.C.).[1] He played as a [forward](/source/Forward_(association_football)).

Short played football for [Birmingham Excelsior](/source/Birmingham_Excelsior_F.C.) before he signed for [Small Heath](/source/Birmingham_City_F.C.) in 1889,[1] and played one game in the [Football Alliance](/source/Football_Alliance) in March 1890.[2] He then played a few games for Unity Gas before returning to Small Heath later the same year. Short, a natural [goal poacher](/source/Goal_poacher),[1] played and scored regularly in the [1890–91](/source/1890%E2%80%9391_in_English_football) Football Alliance season. He also appeared in the [1890–91 FA Cup](/source/FA_Cup_1890%E2%80%9391), taking part in the 8–0 defeat of [Hednesford Town](/source/Hednesford_Town_F.C.) and then scoring the opening goal in a 2–0 victory against Wednesbury old Athletic in the Second Qualifying Round.[2] However, following a complaint, it emerged that his registration, which had lapsed after he left the club, had not been renewed for that season's FA Cup, so Small Heath were disqualified from the competition for fielding an unregistered player.[1]

Short's older brother [George](/source/George_Short_(footballer)) also played professionally for Small Heath.[1]
