==Playing career==
A [curveball](/source/curveball) specialist, Chech reached the majors in 1905 with the [Cincinnati Reds](/source/Cincinnati_Reds), spending two years with them before moving to the [Cleveland Naps](/source/Cleveland_Naps) 1908 and [Boston Red Sox](/source/Boston_Red_Sox) (1909). His most productive season came in his rookie year for Cincinnati, when he recorded career-highs in [wins](/source/win_(baseball)) (14), [strikeout](/source/strikeout)s (79), [starts](/source/starting_pitcher) (25), [complete game](/source/complete_game)s (20) and [innings pitched](/source/innings_pitched) 267{{fraction|2|3}}, while posting a 2.89 [ERA](/source/earned_run_average). After going 11–7 for Cleveland, he was sent to the Red Sox with [Jack Ryan](/source/Jack_Ryan_(pitcher)) in the same trade that brought [Cy Young](/source/Cy_Young) to Boston.
  
In a four-season career, Chech posted a 33–30 record with 187 strikeouts and a 2,52 ERA in 606 innings. Following his Major League career, he played for the [St. Paul Apostles](/source/St._Paul_Saints_(1901%E2%80%931960)) of the [American Association](/source/American_Association_(20th_century)).

Chech married Edith Inez Elliot, daughter of James Elliot and Martha Lavinia (Halbach) Elliot, on 12 October 1904 in St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota.<ref>[https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/606399:2561 Edith Inez Elliott].
