Cave|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=Rz7Yv9ZTaiEC&pg=PA380|page=380|accessdate=2017-01-14}}</ref> formerly of [Hull](/source/Kingston_upon_Hull), and the brother of another [John Wray](/source/John_Wray_(civil_servant)), the [Receiver of the Metropolitan Police](/source/Receiver_of_the_Metropolitan_Police) from 1829 to 1860. He was educated at [Shrewsbury](/source/Shrewsbury_School), then took a B.A. (1807) and M.A. (1810) from [Trinity College, Cambridge](/source/Trinity_College%2C_Cambridge).<ref name="cam">{{Acad|id=WRY803C|name=Wray, Charles}}</ref>

He was [called to the bar](/source/called_to_the_bar) in 1811 from [Lincoln's Inn](/source/Lincoln's_Inn), and worked on the [Northern Circuit](/source/Northern_Circuit); he was then nominated [Recorder](/source/Recorder_(judge)) of [Hull](/source/Kingston_upon_Hull). In 1821, he was appointed [Chief Justice of Guyana](/source/Chief_Justice_of_Guyana), and served in this capacity until 1835.
