==Military career==
Stainforth was [commissioned](/source/Officer_(armed_forces)) into the [Indian Army](/source/Indian_Army) in 1936<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=34262|page=1471|date=6 March 1936}}</ref> and fought in [World War II](/source/World_War_II): he transferred to the [Royal Army Service Corps](/source/Royal_Army_Service_Corps) in 1948.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=38245|page=2066|date=25 March 1948|supp=y}}</ref>
