Shortly after the AAA Championships, he competed in the 1912 Olympic Games, in Stockholm, Sweden, where he was eliminated in the first round of the [1500 metres competition](/source/Athletics_at_the_1912_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Men's_1500_metres), as well as in the first rounds of the [5000 metres competition](/source/Athletics_at_the_1912_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Men's_5000_metres) and [10000 metres competition](/source/Athletics_at_the_1912_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Men's_10%2C000_metres).<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.olympedia.org/athletes/69453 |title=Charles Ruffell |work=Olympedia |access-date=18 April 2021}}</ref>

During World War I, he served in Palestine as a sapper with the Royal Engineers. He died at the age of 35 from acute pneumonia following a bout of influenza.
