# Charles Parent

**Charles Eugène Parent** (18 November 1894 – 12 June 1961) was a [Liberal party](/source/Liberal_Party_of_Canada) and [Independent Liberal](/source/Independent_Liberal) member of the [House of Commons of Canada](/source/House_of_Commons_of_Canada). He was born in [Quebec City](/source/Quebec_City), [Quebec](/source/Quebec) and became a lawyer by career.

He was first elected to Parliament at the [Quebec West and South](/source/Quebec_West_and_South) riding in the [1935 general election](/source/1935_Canadian_federal_election) then re-elected there in [1940](/source/1940_Canadian_federal_election). From 23 November 1944 until the 1949 election, Parent was not a member of the Liberal party but instead sat as an Independent Liberal. Parent and several other Quebec Liberal MPs had broken with their party as a result of the [Conscription Crisis of 1944](/source/Conscription_Crisis_of_1944), quitting the Liberal caucus in order to oppose the government's decision to deploy [National Resources Mobilization Act](/source/National_Resources_Mobilization_Act) conscripts overseas. Previously, conscripts had only been used for "home defence" and kept within Canada.[2] He ran and was re-elected as an "Independent Liberal" in the [1945 federal election](/source/1945_Canadian_federal_election).

When the Quebec West and South riding was dissolved, Parent became the candidate at the expanded [Quebec West](/source/Quebec_West) riding which he won as an official Liberal candidate in the [1949 election](/source/1949_Canadian_federal_election). Parent lost to [J.-Wilfrid Dufresne](/source/J.-Wilfrid_Dufresne) of the [Progressive Conservative party](/source/Progressive_Conservative_Party_of_Canada) in the [1953 election](/source/1953_Canadian_federal_election).

His father, [Simon-Napoléon Parent](/source/Simon-Napol%C3%A9on_Parent), was a [Premier of Quebec](/source/Premier_of_Quebec) and a mayor of [Quebec City](/source/Quebec_City). Charles Parent's brother, [Georges Parent](/source/Georges_Parent), was a Senator and also a member of the House of Commons.[1]
