# Charles Mules

**Charles Oliver Mules** (8 September 1837, [Ilminster](/source/Ilminster) – 9 October 1927, [Nelson, New Zealand](/source/Nelson,_New_Zealand)) was the third [Anglican Bishop of Nelson](/source/Anglican_Bishop_of_Nelson),[1] whose [Episcopate](/source/Episcopate) spanned a 20-year period during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.[2]

He was educated at [Cheltenham College](/source/Cheltenham_College) and [Trinity College, Cambridge](/source/Trinity_College,_Cambridge),[3][4] and ordained in 1864. After a [curacy](/source/Curate) at [Whorlton, County Durham](/source/Whorlton,_County_Durham) he emigrated to [New Zealand](/source/New_Zealand) to work under [Andrew Suter](/source/Andrew_Suter), [Anglican Bishop of Nelson](/source/Anglican_Bishop_of_Nelson). He was [Vicar](/source/Vicar) of [Brightwater](/source/Brightwater)[5] then [Archdeacon](/source/Archdeacon)[6] of [Waimea](/source/Waimea_River,_Tasman) before succeeding Suter. At some point he became a [Doctor of Divinity](/source/Doctor_of_Divinity).

After resigning his [see](/source/Episcopal_see) he lived at Trafalgar Square in the [city](/source/Nelson,_New_Zealand) until his death on 9 October 1927.[7] He is buried at [St Michael's, Waimea West](/source/St_Michael's_Church,_Waimea_West).[8]
