'''Charles Montgomery Monteith''' (9 February 1921 &ndash; 9 May 1995) was a [British](/source/British_people) literary editor. He was born in [Lisburn](/source/Lisburn), [County Antrim](/source/County_Antrim), and won a scholarship to [Magdalen College, Oxford](/source/Magdalen_College%2C_Oxford) where he earned a [Double First](/source/British_undergraduate_degree_classification). He fought in [World War Two](/source/World_War_Two), serving in [India](/source/India) and [Burma](/source/Burma) with the [Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers](/source/Royal_Inniskilling_Fusiliers), and was badly injured. He joined [Faber & Faber](/source/Faber_%26_Faber) in 1954 at the urging of [Geoffrey Faber](/source/Geoffrey_Faber) who, like Monteith, was a Fellow of [All Souls College](/source/All_Souls_College).
