Hamond first stood for election at the [1874 Newcastle-upon-Tyne by-election](/source/1874_Newcastle-upon-Tyne_by-election), but was unsuccessful. However, he was then elected for the seat at the 1874 election, but was beaten again in 1880.<ref name="craig1832">{{cite book|editor1-last=Craig|editor1-first=F. W. S.|editor-link=F. W. S.
